What We Measure, With What, and What You Receive

Inspection is not a department that catches mistakes at the end. Most of what follows happens while the part is still on the machine.

Inspection at three stages What is checked when material arrives, while the part is being made, and before it ships, and what the customer receives. WHAT GETS MEASURED, AND WHEN Most of this happens while the part is still on the machine. Incoming Grade and heat number Mill certificate 3.1 Melt-and-pour country Dimensions of the plate PMI where specified In process First article, every new part Cut dimensions and hole position Bend angles Weld visual to ISO 5817 Machined dimensions at setup Final Full dimensional report UT / MT on specified welds Coating thickness Document pack assembled Packing photographed What travels with the shipment EN 10204 3.1 certificates · melt-and-pour record · welding and heat treatment logs · first-article dimensional report · coating and packing record

Three stages

Incoming — Grade, heat number, dimensions, mill certificate and melt-and-pour origin recorded against the job number before the plate is cut.

In process — First article on every new part number. Cut dimensions, hole size and position, bend angles, weld visual inspection, and machined dimensions checked at setup and at completion.

Final — Dimensional report, visual inspection, material certificate, welding and heat treatment records, coating thickness, and a packing check with photographs.

Choosing a datum on a welded part Diagram contrasting a datum taken from a welded edge, which moves, with a datum taken from a machined base, which does not. WHERE THE DATUM COMES FROM Same part, same machine, two different results. Datum on a welded edge moves as the weldment relaxes — holes drift Datum on a machined base stable — hole position held to ±0.5 mm

Third-party inspection

SGS, TÜV, BV, Intertek, DNV or your own inspector can be arranged. Tell us at order stage so we can build the hold points into the schedule — adding an inspection point after production has started costs everyone time.

With every shipment

Every shipment leaves with the paperwork trail: EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates, documented melt-and-pour origin, welding records, a first-article dimensional report, and the coating and packing record.
